THE LONDON MARATHON 1999 -QUOTES AND NOTES
By: Steve Cram (romped home in 2:35.50 -a personal best)
ELANA MEYER(RSA), 5th in 2:27.18 "I had cramp in my leg
from halfway. The conditions were great and it's a great
course. There were lots of South Africans on the course
so I got lots of support. I'll definitely be coming back
next year."
JEREMY BATES finished in 3:41.50 "It's all about how you
feel and today I felt awful. I was looking at the markers
from 3 miles but it got much better in the second half.
Around 22/23 miles it was fantastic -the crowds were
great and made a big difference. I was running for Great
Ormond Street Hospital. It's my last marathon."
CHRIS KAMARA finished in 3:46.45 "I felt great until 20
miles. I got halfway in 2:27. The atmosphere and occasion
were something else. I'd recommend it to any footballer
who's missing the buzz of a football ground. It's the same
adrenalin buzz. I was running for 6 charities and raised
about £3,000."
JASON FLEMYNG finished in 3:53.20 "I was worried about
my mate who was in trouble. I stopped three times and
then fell over. My mate told me to run on but I felt
guttered. I left him at 13m. I was running for the
Terrence Higgins Trust and raised about £3000. I'm going
to get really, really drunk tonight. I'm never going
jogging again!" (but then ran off down The Mall...)
JASON STATHAM finished in 3:35.20 "It was horrible! I had
a really good first five to six miles but about halfway
I was in complete agony, especially my calves and knee.
But the crowds took away the pain and the big crowds
really spur you on."
CHRIS CHITTELL finished in 4:36.43 "Never again! It was my
second marathon. It's a wonderful buzz but I didn't sort
my feet out right this time."
LINUS ROACHE finished in 3:48.27 "It was my first marathon.
I ran with Jerome and we limited each other. It meant we
had an even pace. I don't know if I'll run it again. I've
had a bit of problem with my knee and hip. I was running
for Kosovo. It was great to see so many runners with
gold ribbons. And we heard today that the Boston marathon
will support us too."
JEROME FLYNN finished in 3:48.27 "I felt more confident
this year but my longest training run was 11 miles. I ran
with Linus for Kosovo. People seemed to respond well and
were willing to help. It's my second marathon. I'll probably
do it again next year. I'm flying to Newcastle tonight
to start filming on my new series."
